The Kalbar Sunflower Festival 2024 partnered with Disability Access and Inclusion Consultants to create a sensory garden and implement several accessibility initiatives. This partnership aimed to enhance the festival’s inclusivity and accessibility, ensuring a welcoming environment for all attendees, particularly those with disability. Observations revealed the Festival had many strengths, including a strong commitment to accessibility evident by the establishment of an Inclusion Coordinator role. However, there were areas for improvement such as formalising processes and broadening the scope of accessibility considerations beyond physical and mobility disabilities.
Kalbar Sunflower Festival partnered with Disability Access and Inclusion Consultants to enhance the festival’s accessibility and inclusivity for all patrons, including those with disability, provide sensory-friendly environments, and facilitate easier access and mobility within the festival grounds. Additionally, it sought to offer quiet spaces for attendees who might feel overwhelmed and require a less stimulating environment. By the end of the partnership, significant strengths and improvements were observed.

Provided buggy rides with height-adjustable steps to assist patrons with mobility issues, improving access and convenience.
5. Quiet Tent:
A quiet tent was set up to offer a less stimulating environment for those needing a break from the sensory input, although it faced issues with wind and lack of monitoring.
Through consulting with experts in disability, access and inclusion, Kalbar Sunflower Festival significantly enhanced the festival’s accessibility and inclusivity. This collaboration not only improved the experience for patrons with disability but also bolstered the festival’s reputation as an inclusive and accessible event. The successful implementation of various accessibility features and the positive feedback received highlight the partnership’s impact, setting a benchmark for future events. The sensory garden saw high–traffic and positive feedback, the accessible track within the sunflower field was improved, and the buggy rides received commendations for their accessibility enhancements. The collaboration also led to enhanced co-design efforts with disability organisations, better resource management for accessibility features, and increased feedback for future improvements. Consulting with Queensland’s leading disability provider made a notable difference, particularly in the co-design and creation of the sensory garden, the improvement of accessibility features based on feedback, and the heightened awareness and focus on inclusion and accessibility at the festival. Attendees provided positive feedback about the sensory garden and other accessibility features, leading to increased patron satisfaction, and a greater sense of inclusion among attendees with disability.
