Hotel Etico: A pioneering social enterprise in Australian tourism

Hotel Etico, located in the picturesque Blue Mountains, stands as Australia’s first social enterprise hotel. This innovative establishment seamlessly blends a delightful tourism experience for guests with an impactful employment and training program for people with disability.  The program centres on developing essential work and independent living skills, allowing trainees to rotate through various hospitality roles over a 12-month period. During this time, they earn formal certifications in areas such as Responsible Service of Alcohol, Barista Skills, and Safe Food Handling.

Hotel Etico prioritises fair compensation, pays trainees full award wages, and puts them at the forefront of the business.  Upon graduating from the program, trainees receive continued support for another 12 months and are helped to secure open employment with Hotel Etico’s various hospitality partners. The program’s success is evident in its track record of six graduates who have all successfully transitioned into further employment.  With plans to expand across Australia and take on 12 trainees annually, Hotel Etico serves as a shining example of a progressive and inclusive small business.
